The BAALA Conference Abstracts provide an opportunity for participants to engage with the 2025 theme, “Repositioning and revitalisation of Indigenous African languages in South African Higher Education in the digital era.” Contributors are invited to submit abstracts showcasing research and insights aligned with the conference’s focus areas, which include topics such as African languages in higher education, digitalisation, linguistics, and language planning. Each abstract should reflect originality, relevance to the theme, and adhere to the bilingual submission requirement if presented in an African language. Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference’s “Book of Abstracts,” alongside the programme.
Participants must adhere to specific guidelines, submitting a maximum of two abstracts (or one for postgraduate students) by 13 December 2024. Submissions must not have been published or submitted elsewhere, and presenters are expected to indicate their preferred language for delivery. Translators will be available for selected languages, ensuring inclusivity in communication. Accepted participants are required to confirm attendance, register by 31 January 2025, and provide proof of payment as outlined in the registration process
You are invited to submit abstract for the 2025 BAALA Conference according to the prescribed format. Authors can submit a maximum of two abstracts, but PhD and Masters Students may submit only one. The abstract must fall within one of the conference sub- themes, and submissions may not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.
All abstracts should be in English. Abstract for authors wishing to present in an African Language of their choice should be bilingual (i.e. the African Language and English). Authors should indicate their preferred language for paper presentation. However, interpreters and translators will only be available for Sesotho, Setswana, isiZulu and isiXhosa. Abstracts will be published in the “Book of Abstracts” with the final programme.
